The Fourth of July is something to look forward to every summer – family, friends, parades, barbecues, and fireworks. But more than that, it is a time to celebrate the land of the free, the home of the brave, and the privilege of living in the United States of America.

When the Revolutionary War broke out in April 1775, those fighting for complete independence from Great Britain were considered radical. As hostility grew against the monarchy, the radicals gained support and eventually, on July 4,

1776, the Declaration of Independence was formally adopted. Radical thinking and fighting for what they believed in created great change.

Today, as our country has witnessed great tragedy, destruction, and sadness, our hope is that we will continue to move forward toward peace, true equality, and great change, and reflecting on the bravery that birthed our nation.
