MEMORIAL DAY 2020

Memorial Day is an American holiday, observed on the last Monday of May, honoring the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. military.  My heart goes out to the front-line workers as well.  They are deserving of our admiration and appreciation for serving our communities.

So, this Memorial Day you can fly the U.S. Flag at half-staff until noon and make a pledge for the coming year to:

  • Reach out to a neighbor in need

  • Perform an act of random kindness

  • Mentor (even at a distance someone in need of encouragement)

  • Serve at a local soup kitchen or food bank

  • Donate blood

  • Pick up trash along the road or at a local park

Everyone can be great because anyone can serve. You don't have to have a college degree to serve. You don't even have to make your subject and your verb agree to serve... You only need a heart full of grace. A soul generated by love... --Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Why do I do what I do? Because I strive to have a humble servant's heart. Realizing this is not all about me. I am called to love people where they are at.

“He answered, “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind’; and, ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ ””

Luke 10:27 NIV

With Summer just around the corner, and as the nation is beginning to emerge from extreme restrictions over the past two months. Just like the hope of celebrations and fun that spring forth every June, there is now a hint of promise shining through that a better normal is on the horizon.

While the country is opening up, ABACORP is currently inundated with new protocols for many aspects of our business, including things like HR policies and mandatory screenings. But just like professional athletes, we must focus on the details while not losing sight of the big picture, which inspires motivation. In this case, it’s the light at the end of the tunnel: coming out of this unprecedented time stronger, more equipped, and ready to celebrate.

As we continue to face this pandemic together, it’s more important now, than ever, to stay encouraged. Reflect on history – our world has endured many hardships. Find strength knowing that we carry on. We refine. We innovate. We adapt. We persist. Find inspiration in our ancestors, and the lessons they left behind. Be thankful for those who fed into your life. And next month we will celebrate our father figures, whether they are still with us or not.

Let’s raise a toast to them together, while we continue to make an impact for each other and the world.
